Is AION 2 Pay To Win? Every Charge, Line By Line
Free to play with an optional USD 15/month membership unlocking the Market and Kina-to-Quna exchange. The shop is cosmetics and consumables, NC says no power.

The answer has two layers.
Layer one: can you buy combat power directly? On NC’s published model, no. Cosmetics and consumables, NC says, “do not affect gear progression or long-term power”.
Layer two: can you convert real money into Kina and buy what other players farmed? Yes. That does not contradict the explicit promise, but it is a money-to-resource channel.
So whether that counts as pay to win is a line you draw. This page just lays out the verifiable structure.
Every charge, in one table
| Item | Price | What it unlocks | Does NC say it affects power? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base game | Free | The full game | - |
| Membership | USD 15/month, optional | The Market, the Kina-to-Quna exchange, a shop where you can spend Kina, plus “additional gameplay benefits” NC does not itemise | NC says no combat power |
| Shop - cosmetics | Per item | Outfits, wings, pets, weapon skins, accessories | NC says “purely aesthetic”, no combat advantage |
| Shop - consumables | Per item | Potions, resurrection stones and similar | NC says they do not affect gear progression or long-term power, and are earnable in game |
| Battle Pass | Unpublished | Free and paid tracks using the premium currency Kuna. Per character, not per account | NC says it rewards normal progression plus extra items and cosmetics |
| Founder’s Pack | 24.99 / 49.99 / 99.99 USD | Early access, cosmetics, consumables, 30 days of membership | NC says the cosmetic items carry no stats |
All of that comes from NC’s business model notice published July 8, 2026 (titled “Business Model - Our Approach”, nine sections) and NC America’s Founder’s Pack press release. NC also notes “some areas may change as our preparation for launch continues”.
Why the Market is the flashpoint
NC describes the Market as “the center of AION 2’s player-driven economy”. Players buy and sell with Kina at prices they set themselves. The Kina-to-Quna exchange is likewise entirely between players - NC states “the game makes no listings or purchases”.
Then NC states twice, plainly: trading on the Market and on the exchange requires an active membership.
Community reaction was blunt. In the r/Games thread, one player argued that blocking the in-game market means a core MMO feature sits behind a paywall. Others pushed back, comparing it to FFXIV’s free trial being unable to use market boards, and noting that a membership gate is a standard way to deter bot accounts.
Both readings are defensible. The difference is whether you read “membership” as a subscription fee or as a trading licence.
NC chose the word “membership”. In games, that word usually signals optional, while “subscription” signals required. One player called it “an interesting re-wording of subscription”. That observation is worth keeping, because it explains why plenty of people finished the notice still unsure whether the game is subscription-based.
What NC actually promises about power
Quoting the official lines gives you three:
- Cosmetics: “purely aesthetic”, with no gameplay or combat advantage
- Consumables: do not affect gear progression or long-term power, and are earnable through normal play
- Market and exchange: entirely between players; the game itself lists and buys nothing
In other words, NC promises not to sell gear progression, not that it sells no advantage whatsoever. That distinction matters when you make your own call.
NC on the record: no gacha, no change to the model
The lines above are notice text. Two more come from a face-to-face interview and are more direct.
In a July 20, 2026 interview with Korean outlet GameVu, two NC leads were asked about gacha directly. Development PD Kim Nam-jun said: “Some people worry the global version will change the business model - please be assured, it will not.”
Business lead Seo In-seop added context: K-MMORPGs lean hard on gacha, which is why people keep asking when AION 2 will add it, but “Korea and Taiwan reached this point without gacha”, and he asked players to trust that result first. An earlier Japanese interview even carried “not a single gacha will be sold” in its headline.
The same interview adds two facts: a team of roughly 350 shipping weekly updates, and shared content development with per-region balance teams. The latter explains why Korean balance changes do not automatically reach the global build - including numbers and class strength.
What already happened on the Korean service
To judge global risk, Korean history beats speculation.
A creator who tracks the game closely assembled this timeline. Everything below is his summary, not an official notice.
- At Korean launch, a named developer said a certain progression item would not be sold for Kuna. It later appeared in a real-money bundle. Combat enhancement scrolls - short-term damage and resistance buffs - appeared in another bundle. Players called the promise broken, and NC withdrew the products and apologised.
- Korean launch had two membership tiers. A bundle followed, and on a 28-day cycle with the pass, the real monthly spend approached USD 40-50. The auction house was subscription-gated from day one.
- In mid-2026 Korea merged the two tiers into one cheaper plan and moved to a 30-day cycle. A real improvement, and also a repeat of the pattern: overreach, damage, then a concession.
The practical reading for global: global starts from the later half of that timeline (single tier, no gacha). But the same interview notes some areas may still change, so look at what the shop actually sells before believing any framing.
Three moves for free players
- Do not plan to monetise through the Market. Use or dismantle drops rather than hoarding a stash of “sell later” items.
- If you need to trade, buy membership monthly rather than annually. Treat it as this month’s trading tool. The Founder’s Pack includes 30 days of membership, which covers month one - see the Founder’s Pack comparison.
- Build a self-sufficient gathering and crafting loop. Reducing reliance on the Market is the most practical free-player strategy.
Three questions that set your own line
- Can you still take part fully without paying? NC says yes, but the Market and exchange stay closed. PvE and PvP work; economic participation does not.
- Can paying buy power directly? NC says no. Cosmetics and consumables do not affect gear progression or long-term power.
- Can paying buy power indirectly? Yes, by exchanging Quna for Kina that other players list. That does not violate NC’s explicit promise, but it is a money-to-resource channel.
The third answer is your line. This wiki will not declare “yes” or “no” for you.
Prices and promotions are moving data; the figures above are as of September 18, 2026. For how monetization touches PvP, see the PvP page. For overall quality, see the review roundup.
